She attended the Katherine Gibbs School and was a secretary and office administrator at the law firm Nutter, McClennen & Fish for 39 years.

A member of the Boston Philomathea Club, she served on its Board in a number of leadership roles.

Her defining roles, however, were those of daughter, sister, aunt, great-aunt and friend. In these many roles she found the fullest expression of her long life. She became the hub of her immediate and extended family and is remembered lovingly and gratefully.

Kitty’s death brings to a close a storied chapter in the long history between the Boston Red Sox and the Dooley family. Her father, John S. “Jack” Dooley, who died in 1970, was the most loyal of the “Royal Rooters.” A semi-pro ballplayer in his youth, Jack was a pivotal off-field player in a number of early Red Sox moves to establish themselves in Boston, including convincing the Baseball Commissioner to locate the Boston American League franchise at the old Huntington Avenue grounds, the site of the first World Series in 1903. In 2008, Kitty became the third member of her family to throw out the first ball for a Red Sox season; after her sister Libby in 1991, and her beloved father in 1968.

William H. Tucker, an attorney and former Chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission under President Kennedy, whose life was shaped by his service with the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II, passed away on Friday, November 21st, 2008 surrounded by his family on Cape Cod. He was 85.

Born in Boston, he joined the Army in 1942 following the outbreak of World War II and made three combat jumps with I-Company of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne.

Mr. Tucker had already made a 1943 combat jump at Salerno, Italy when he parachuted into Sainte-Mere-Eglise in the opening hours of the June 6, 1944 D-Day invasion of Normandy, France.

After serving in the entire Normandy campaign, Mr. Tucker made his third combat jump in September 1944 during Operation Market Garden, the Allied invasion of Holland. Rising to the rank of sergeant, he then fought in the Battle of the Bulge until he was wounded on Jan. 3, 1945, in Fosse, Belgium.

Mr. Tucker was the recipient of the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman’s Badge and numerous other World War II campaign medals and decorations.

Francois Gauthier, France’s Consul General to Boston, presented him with the French Legion of Honor - France’s highest military decoration – on July 14th in a ceremony at the Langham Hotel in downtown Boston that was attended by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick.

Mr. Tucker had a legal career of more than 50 years and served in the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations on the Interstate Commerce Commission, shaping key transportation regulations during the Civil Rights Movement. But it was his service during World War II during the liberation of France that shaped his life and was among his proudest accomplishments.

He was particularly honored to receive the French Legion of Honor last summer. “It’s a wonderful thing to be recognized by the French,’’ he said at the time. “Not as a hero of any kind, but just as one of many guys – good soldiers and sailors all - who worked very hard to defeat the Germans. Just being part of that, the jump (into Normandy) – I think about it all the time. My participation in D-Day as a paratrooper has been the biggest thing in my life.’’

Following his military service, Mr. Tucker attended Boston University on the GI Bill and earned his law degree before starting a law practice in Athol, Massachusetts in 1949.

Having met a young John F. Kennedy in 1946, Mr. Tucker worked on Kennedy’s Senate and presidential campaigns and was appointed by President Kennedy to the Interstate Commerce Commission in 1960.

He later served as vice-president of the Penn Central Railroad and was a special consultant to the Board of Directors of American Airlines. Mr. Tucker was appointed by President Carter as Commissioner of the National Transportation Policy Commission in 1977 and later served as a U.S. Trustee for the Department of Justice.

During his professional career, Mr. Tucker made numerous trips back to France, Holland and Belgium and wrote four books about his World War II service and his subsequent post-war career, including “Parachute Soldier,’’ “Rendezvous at Rochelinval,’’ and “D-Day, Thirty-Five Days in Normandy.’’

He was a founding president of the 82nd Airborne Division C-47 Club, which now has chapters throughout the United States and Europe, and was a founding committee member for the Liberation Museum in Groesbeek, Holland, which honors the American paratrooper units that served during the 1944 invasion and liberation of Holland.
