Obituary for Alice Melvina Castro

Alice Melvina Price Castro, lovingly known as Melvina to all who knew her, was born on December 20,1932, in Tela, Honduras, to Clarice Brown and Kermit Price, both of whom preceded her in death. As the eldest daughter, Melvina carried her role with strength, grace, and quiet responsibility throughout her life.

After her mother fell ill, Melvina and her brother (James Beto Price) were raised by their aunt, Ms. Louise Ellis, their mother’s only sister, who helped shape the foundation of love and resilience that would define Melvina’s life.

While growing up in Tela, Mevina met Jorge Castro, whose work brought him through the area along his train route. From that meeting, a lifelong union began. At the age of nineteen, Melvina moved to Progreso, Honduras, where her journey into motherhood and family life truly took root.

From her union with Jorge, Melvina was blessed with nine children, five daughters (one of whom passed at birth) and four sons. While deeply devoted to her family, Melvina was far more than a stay-at-home mother. She was a determined entrepreneur with a strong work ethic, creating and managing various businesses to support her household and care for her children. Her resilience and perseverance were evident in everything she did in life.

Melvina immigrated to the United States in May, 1972 at the age of 39. Upon arriving in America, she built a life rooted in hard work, compassion, and dedication.

She began her career as a domestic worker, serving with care and professionalism in the homes of several families in Newton, Massachusetts, including the Southmayd, Giddon, Levenson, and Price families. Melvina formed lasting relationships with each of these families, distinguished by her warmth, reliability, and kindness.

Her passion for helping others led her to a long and meaningful career in healthcare. Melvina joined Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston in 1993 working in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Melvina remained a valued member of the Brigham and Women’s team until her retirement in 2014. Melvina’s journey exemplifies resilience, service, and lifelong dedication to the wellbeing of others, a legacy that has touched countless lives both inside and outside the hospital.

After Melvina retired, every Sunday became a cherished tradition. Her children, grandchildren, family, and friends would gather together to play music, share meals, and tell stories. Melvina especially loved listening to music, and her favorite song was “Before the Next Teardrop Falls” by Freddy Fender. You could often find her dancing, happily showing off her moves with one of her children or grandchildren. The Sunday family gatherings continued until her passing and will live on, carrying forward her legacy of life, love, family, and togetherness.

Melvina was known for her unwavering belief in helping others, regardless of her own circumstances or challenges. She gave selflessly, often placing the needs of others before her own. Her greatest goal in life was to create a better future for her family, and she worked tirelessly to provide them with opportunity, stability, and love. Her hobbies included, spending time with her family, spending her Saturdays at haymarket, and clipping coupons.

Melvina embraced everyone, her husband's children, and the entire Castro family with unconditional love. She carried deep wisdom and knowledge and was known in her family for her memorable sayings, such as, “Drunk or sober, figure your business,” and “It’s sad when you don’t love yourself.” Through her words and actions, she taught her children to live as a family, to walk in love, and to carry themselves with pride.

Melvina’s legacy lives on through her children and all those whose lives she touched with her kindness, generosity, and strength. She will be forever remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, a true friend, a hardworking provider, and a woman whose heart was always open to others. She was blessed to see the four generations- a living testimony of the arm of the lord. Melvina was faithful in her Catholic Faith and routinely received communion at home from Father Jack.
