Obituary for Aneatha "Yaya" Burton

Today, we gather in love and remembrance to celebrate the life of a remarkable woman our mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend—Eris Aneatha Edwards de Burton.

Born on June 15, 1950, in the heart of the universe Panamá, República de Panamá, Aneatha was an outgoing soul from the very beginning. She grew up in the close-knit community of La Boca Town, where her roots were planted deep in family, faith, and culture. From a youthful age, she radiated a quiet strength and a fierce determination that would guide her through a life of resilience and creativity.

Aneatha’s early education at María Osa de Amador Elementary was the foundation of her learning. She continued her education at the Escuela de Modistería – El Hogar, where she graduated as a skilled seamstress.

But Aneatha was never one to be confined by a single path. Her elegance and poise led her to her attending a modeling school in Balboa, Panama where she carried herself with confidence. Later, her love for food, friends and a fun time led her to attending culinary school, mastering the art of cooking feeding body and having an enjoyable time.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Nathaniel and Lydia Urdeen Edwards; her dear brother Alvin Clyde Edwards; her cherished niece Shawna Marie Francis; and her devoted husband, Rogelio Burton. Though we mourn their absence, we take comfort in knowing they are reunited now, watching over us with love.

Aneatha’s legacy lives on in the many lives she touched. She is survived by her loving sisters, Myrtle Edwards and Melinda Yolanda Edwards de Francis, her brothers, Jose Enrique Edwards, Ray Irvin Edwards, and Vince Todd Edwards. She was the proud mother of Urdeen Evangelina Lopez, Braulio Omar Lopez, Kadil Abdiel Lopez, and April Star Edwards. Her grandchildren Abraham R.N. Lopez, Elijah Mateo Lopez-Kittrell, Amari Yanise Lopez, Joseph Y’ayre Lopez, Star David Atkinson, and August Daniel Atkinson were the light of her life, each one carrying a piece of her heart.

She was a beloved aunt to her nieces B and Y, Karen, Tanisha, Ayoka, Desiray, Tanisha, Destiny, and Alisha and to her nephews Jose, Alvin, Nathaniel, Vince, and Joseph. Her great-nieces Mercedes, Stephanie, Ximeily, Jae, Karma, Brielle, Camaron, and Trinity, Her loving goddaughter Sharlene Paul and godson Eustacio Salamandra along with her honorary children Yolanda Parker mother of Amari and Joseph and David Atkinson father of Star David and August and a host of cousins, all carry her memory forward in their hearts.

Aneatha was the life of every party. Her laughter was infectious, her dance moves unforgettable, and her presence magnetic. She had a way of lighting up a room not just with her style and grace, but with her joy, her humor, and her infamous reply to compliments “I KNOW” Whether it was a family gathering, a church event, or a simple get-together, if Aneatha was there, you knew it was going to be a show.

Aneatha had a gift for making people feel welcomed. Her phone was always within reach, and her unique presence may not have always led to clarity but her animated use of colorful language left you with an unforgettable memory. She wore many hats, she was a cook, a midwife, a party planner, a babysitter, and an MC for many special occasions.

Though our hearts are heavy, we celebrate Aneatha’s life with gratitude. She taught us how to have an enjoyable time. Her spirit lives on in every story we share, every recipe passed down, every time we hear “Yo no se Manana.”

She lived freely, loved fiercely, and left nothing unsaid. Rest easy Aneatha, knowing your life was a masterpiece of your own making.
