Obituary for Antonio Jose Lopes

Antonio Jose Lopes was born on September 1, 1938 in Fogo, Cabo Verde. He departed this life on January 23, 2024. Antonio departed from this earth, tenderly cared for by his youngest brother, Alberto Lopes, and his wife on his final day.

Antonio was the son of Severeano Lopes and Balbina Spinola Lopes and was raised by Maria “Bai” Lopes after his mother’s untimely death. He is survived by his siblings Leopordo Teixeira, Joao Teixeira, Gabriel Pereira, Dolores Teixeira, Alberto Lopes, Augusto Lopes, Maria Antonia Brandao, Pedro Dasilva, and the late Domingos Silverio Pina, Margarida Lopes, and Maria Teresa Andrade.

With dreams of a better life, Antonio left his long beloved home of Cape Verde at the age of 36 and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts in 1974. Upon arrival, he worked a variety of jobs including a butcher at Agar, Fish Fair, and the Colonnade Hotel as a cook.

He met his beautiful and caring wife Maria Antonia Lopes in Cape Verde when they were younger. As faith had it, they met once again after they both moved to America. A relationship blossomed, a love story forever told, and God united them in marriage in 1978. Over the course of 46 years, they shared and built a trove of loving memories together.

He is survived by his four children Zezinha Mitchell, Devon Alves, Tany Lopes, and Kelly Laboy. He is also survived by his grandchildren Mya Nunes, Zuriya Lopes, Taj Lopes, Anyssa Mitchell, Shalamah Barros, Zenaya dos Anjos, Kai’liyah Laboy, Ricky Laboy, and Kyree Laboy.

Antonio was a strong, loving, dedicated, hard-working man. He was a man who not only loved his family but also loved to dance. Antonio loved to joke around, loved his tobacco, and enjoyed his Kung-fu and cowboy movies. We will always remember the days he sat on the front porch, and greeted everyone who walked by with a smile and always greeted his family home after a long day.

Although our family will never be the same, he now rests in peace. We will continue to carry on his legacy and forever tell his life story.
