Obituary for Evelyn A Lewis

Evelyn Agatha Lewis, affectionately known as Evie, passed away peacefully in Boston, Massachusetts, on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the age of 88.

Though her physical presence has left us, her
vibrant spirit and legacy of love, faith, and service will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who knew her.

Born on August 8, 1938, in San Fernando, Trinidad, Evelyn was the seventh of eight children born to Rosemond Trumpet-Walters and Joseph FitzOswald Walters. A proud alumna of St. Paul’s Anglican School, Evelyn later studied clothing design and garment construction under esteemed tutors Nozwelle and Jaggernauth. Through hard work and
determination, she launched her own successful business, gaining a reputation in her town of San Fernando for her exquisite bridal wear and personalized creations.

Evelyn married the love of her life, Wesley “Boysie/Ski” Lewis, who preceded her in death. She was a devoted mother of Shaun and Sharla, whom she cherished deeply and for whom she gave selflessly throughout her life. Her role as a mother—and later as a grandmother to Zalikah, Sharifah, Lashaundra, Ebony, Ziesha, Dashaun, and Xavier.—was central
to her being, and she showed her love not through words alone, but through daily, tireless acts of devotion and care.

After immigrating to the United States, Evelyn settled in Boston where she became a beloved member of the community. For 48 years, from 1971 until her retirement in 2018, she worked at Massachusetts General Hospital. Her dedication to her coworkers and patients was legendary. Even into her 80s, Evelyn would willingly stay for double shifts, and during the Blizzard of 1978, she slept on an exam table at the hospital to ensure patient care would not be
interrupted. Her friend Nancy Burke marveled at her tireless commitment, remembering her positivity and energy even in the most trying circumstances.

Evelyn’s life was a living testimony to service. Whether volunteering as a lunch mother at Channing Elementary School, chaperoning Girl Scouts and the Drum and Bugle Corps, collecting votes for Mel King in the 1983 Boston mayoral campaign, or greeting churchgoers with warmth and grace, she lived to lift others. She held numerous roles at church—including usher, communion steward, greeter, hospitality team
member, and active participant on the membership and worship committees. She was honored as Union Woman of the Year in 1989.

A proud member of the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization and the Methodist faith, Evelyn found joy in music and community, supporting the Spiritual Light Choir’s parent group and embodying the fellowship she so valued. Her favourite seasons—Easter and Christmas—reflected her spirit: filled with renewal, celebration, and love.

To know Evelyn was to experience joy. Her laughter—deep, infectious, and full-bodied—could light up a room. And her youthful appearance never went unnoticed. When someone would marvel at
how young she looked, she’d flash a knowing smile and say with a chuckle, “Black don’t crack.”
Evelyn was a cherished sister to Pearl Massy and a beloved aunt to the Massy, John, Edwards, Logan, Ferguson, Hunte, Chambers, and Coombs families in the U.S. She was preceded in death by her siblings Sarah, Milton, Bernice, Jocelyn, Sybil, and Jacqueline, and cousin Carlyle Morris of London. She held dear friendships with Margaret Cassiram-Philbert, Janice Fyfield, Lorna Jeffers-De Gourville, Coral Bailey, Rose Jamadar, Miss Olive of Lewis Street, Norman DeGraffenreid, Cynthia Moore, Gloria Bowen Daise, Mary Adjetey, Ruth Brown, Ruth Jemison, Iris, Thelma and Arlette Frederick, and Pamela Ottley.

A woman of faith, grace, and unrelenting strength, Evelyn Agatha Lewis leaves behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and radiant love.
She touched countless lives through her kindness,
determination, and joyful spirit. Though she has taken her final rest, her light continues to shine in all who were blessed to know her.

Her life was a life well lived. May she rest in eternal peace.

Visitation will be held at Union Church, 485 Columbus Avenue, Boston on Saturday, June 7th from 11:00AM-12:00PM. Funeral Service to begin at 12:00PM. Interment Private.
