Obituary for Giovanni Anthony Bala
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Giovanni Anthony Bala, who passed away on May 22, 2026, at the age of 22.
Giovanni was born on April 18, 2004, in Boston to Annique and Dominique Bala. Known to many as “Gio,” he was loving, loyal, hardworking, and someone who could always bring light and laughter into any room. He had a way of making people feel cared for and never failed to show up for the people he loved.
From a young age, Gio had a deep passion for basketball and soccer. He proudly played on his high school teams and spent many summers competing on AAU basketball teams, creating lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories through the sports he loved so much. His determination and dedication carried into adulthood, where he successfully completed a rigorous apprenticeship program and became a newly certified union carpenter in Boston — an accomplishment that made both him and his family incredibly proud. Graduating from the program reflected Gio’s hard work, perseverance, and commitment to building a successful future for himself and those he loved.
Gio had a special gift for bringing people together. He connected others effortlessly and created bonds not only within his family, but also among friends who became family. His presence made people feel included, welcomed, and valued, and he created a sense of unity wherever he went.
Gio was raised Catholic and carried his faith closely throughout his life. He had a deep love for Saint Michael and often kept a Saint Michael pendant in his room or car. It was also common for Gio to carry rosaries with him — symbols of faith and protection that brought him comfort and strength.
His faith was also reflected through the meaningful tattoos he carried. Gio had religious tattoos of Mother Mary and prayer hands, both of which are represented on the corners of his casket as a tribute to the faith that guided and protected him throughout his life. He also had a special tattoo that read “Kode Di Nika,” which translates to “Nika’s baby” in Cape Verdean Creole — a symbol of the deep love and bond he shared with his mother as well.
Gio is survived by his parents Annique & Dominique Bala; his sisters, Leslie Bala, Patricia, and Edina, his grandmothers Maria Dacruz & Juliana Gomes; his grandfather Aurelio Bala and many cousins, aunts, uncles, and lifelong friends in both America and Senegal. Family and friends meant everything to Gio, and he shared deep and meaningful bonds with those closest to him.
Though his time here was far too short, Gio’s spirit, love, and impact will forever live on through the memories, stories, and laughter shared by those who knew him best.
Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever in our hearts.
