Obituary for Jean Merchard Exume

Jean Merchard Exume, born January 5, 1953, was a vibrant and memorable man whose presence could fill a room. He loved sharing stories and could spend hours recounting moments from his life with friends and family. Those stories were never just stories—they were pieces of his journey, reflections of his humor, and glimpses into the life he lived.

Jean deeply valued the people around him. He enjoyed being surrounded by friends and family, singing, laughing, and welcoming new faces into conversation. Meeting new people brought him joy, and he never missed an opportunity to share stories of his childhood and the experiences that shaped him.

He was a loving father and a devoted brother, someone whose presence meant a great deal to those closest to him. Jean was also known for his stubbornness at times—but that stubbornness was rooted in something deeper: his strong sense of independence and his belief in living life on his own terms.

Jean believed in the power of choice. The choice to love. The choice to forgive. The choice to laugh even when life was difficult, and the choice to move forward no matter what challenges came his way. Through the way he lived his life, he reminded us that kindness does not have to be loud to be meaningful, that anger does not define a person, and that calmness and peace are choices we can all strive to make.

Jean’s legacy will live on through his siblings and his children. His stories, his lessons, and his spirit will continue to carry forward from one generation to the next. In the smiles, the laughter, and the strength of his children, you will always see pieces of him.

So when you look at them, remember that Jean is still present in the love he gave, the lessons he shared, and the memories we hold. This moment is not truly a goodbye—it is simply a “see you later.”

As the historian Thucydides once said:

"What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others."

Jean Merchard Exume has woven himself into the lives of many, and for that, he will never be forgotten.
