Obituary for Joan "Joannie" B. (Molloy) Hayes

Joan “Joannie” B. (Molloy) Hayes of Sandwich, MA, formerly of Boston, MA, passed away suddenly on June 4, 2025.

Born on February 24, 1950, in Boston, Joannie was the beloved daughter of the late Robert and Anna (Faherty) Molloy. She went on to build a life rooted in love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to those she held dear.

Joannie was the cherished wife of Frederick “Rick” Hayes, with whom she shared nearly 40 beautiful years of marriage. They would have celebrated their 40th anniversary this coming September. Together, they raised two daughters who were the light of Joannie's life: Katie and her husband Ryan Ruthinoski of Westwood, MA, and Briana and her fiancé TJ Shea of Boston, MA.

Her greatest joy came with the arrival of her grandsons, Noah and John Ruthinoski, who knew her as their adoring “Nana.” Joannie poured her heart into being present for every moment, big and small, and was never happier than when she was with her family.

The eldest of five siblings, Joannie is survived by her sisters Patricia Finn of Milton, MA, Bernadette Dee of Amherst, NH, Maryellen Molloy of South Boston, MA, and her brother Robert Molloy of West Roxbury, MA. She is also lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and cousins who were all touched by her warmth, kindness, and generosity.

Joannie dedicated many years of her professional life as a legal assistant, most recently with Boston Public Schools. Her work ethic, compassion, and unwavering support of others earned her the admiration of colleagues and friends alike.

As a resident of Boston’s North End, Joannie and Rick raised their daughters amid the rich culture and tight-knit community of the neighborhood before eventually settling in Sandwich. A lover of the ocean, Joannie found peace at the beach and treasured her time by the water, whether walking the shore or simply enjoying the breeze with her family by her side.

Dear Maryellen and Rick: I am so sorry that I can't be with you. I loved Joannie too because we both loved Maryellen and despite the fact that she was a better weather forecaster than I. She was remarkable. So so so sorry. Nancy
