Obituary for John S. Viveiros

Dr. John S. Viveiros, 57, of Hanover, MA passed away on October 25th, 2025 as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident.

He was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts to Lorraine and John W. Viveiros and raised in Rochester, MA with his sisters, Karen Ovian and Kim Griffin.

Dr. John Viveiros studied at Providence College, before going on to earn his Doctorate of Dental Medicine at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Pediatric Dentistry at Children's Hospital of Michigan. As part of his lifelong dedication to helping those with the most need, he also held a faculty appointment at the Tufts Dental Facilities for Persons with Special Needs.

Dr. Viveiros provided specialized dental care for children with an emphasis on persons with special needs at his practice, Braintree Pediatric Dental, for over 20 years, where he helped thousands of children develop lifelong healthy habits.

Dr. Viveiros touched the lives of all who met him. In addition to being a beloved friend and devoted father, he was also a dedicated adventurer and outdoorsman. His energy and enthusiasm extended to every aspect of his life, and he could often be found sailing, fishing, swimming, traveling, or just lounging on the beach.

Dr. John S. Viveiros is survived by his three children: John R. Viveiros, Violet Viveiros, and Elizabeth Viveiros, and his loving partner, Maryann Hickey, as well as by his father, John W. Viveiros, and his sisters Karen Ovian and Kim Griffin.

To honor the memory of John Viveiros, we ask for donations to be made to the Franciscan Fund at Franciscan Children’s Hospital to continue his life’s work of compassionate family-focused care for children with special health care needs.

My family has just learned of the tragic passing of Dr. John and we are deeply saddened by the news. We switched to his office 13 years ago after learning how great he was with kids that have anxiety. My daughter had prior bad experiences at the dentist and was terrified. Dr John handled her with tremendous care, gentleness, warmth and humor, ultimately eradicating her fear altogether. He soon became our favorite pediatric care provider and all three of my kids were happy and comfortable seeing him. We want to extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends. It is clear he touched the lives of so many. May his memory be eternal.

Dr. John was the best dentist and man I have ever came to know.. I just found out today of his passing and, I'm so upset that he is gone. Dr. John was such a kind, warm and welcoming soul. He served me and my other siblings for the past 25yrs at his office, he has helped me through so much and I'll never be able to forget him and everything he did for us and all his other patients. I send all my love and hugs to the family. He was such a great person that is going to be missed forever. - Taylor Routhier

Dr. John was my son's dentist for 2 decades. He's low functioning autistic and had challenges with certain activities, like dentistry. Dr. John knew how to talk to him, to calm and reassure him. The boy that took 3 nurses, 1 doctor and me to hold him down for blood draws, would happily walk into Dr. John's office, hand in hand, for a calm, quiet filling or teeth cleaning and leave again hand in hand with Dr. John, smiling when it was done. My son's school referred to Dr. John as "The Autism Whisperer". My son loved him so much that he started asking often when his next appointment with him was, months in advance. He was beloved by all of us and will be sorely missed. Over the past week, my son has told me several times that "Dr. John" is definitely in heaven. Anyone who saw him in action knows that to be true. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Please accept my sincerest condolences. My son had severe IDD and no other dentist could treat him as well as Dr. Viveiros. Dr. John made a real difference in our lives. He was also such a warm, wonderful human being.

Dr. John will be missed dearly. He was the kindest and coolest dentist...always having the treasure chest filled with fun toys and always stressing the importance of flossing to my four daughters with a smile on his face. He was understanding and also a great listener and conversationalist. My condolences to his family.

Deepest Condolences to John's family and friends following his passing. I have so many fond memories from our 40+ years of friendship. It all started at ORR, but continued through the decades with gatherings, adult soccer leagues (and resulting afternoon in the ER), Sox & Revolution games, weddings, and eventually my son being one of Dr. John's patients... lots of fun activities which were mostly an excuse to catch up. John will be missed, but his legacy will live on through the happy memories and the positive impact he had on others. So sorry that I couldn't make the trip to pass on my condolences personally. Johnny Viv was a really great guy. We lived on the same floor Freshman year at Providence College. We had such a great time that year rooting for the Friars on route to the Final Four. I spent a lot of time in Viv's room drinking Busch beer! I am so sorry about his passing. We also had some good times at Big Sandy Pond with the McDonald bros who I worked with at Reebok. I have fond memories and heard how great he was doing. I just wanted to say he left an indelible mark on people he met even 40 yrs ago!

My sincere condolences to Dr. John's family and friends. He was my disabled son's dentist for many years 20+ years. From the beginning, Dr. John made sure my son and I were comfortable. He was the only doctor my son completely trusted & was confident enough to go right into the treatment area without me. Dr. John was so easy going and reassuring. He had a special calling and will be sadly missed.

Dr. John was an amazing Pediatric Dentist. He was exceptional with my children as well as the many other patients in his practice. He went out of his way to make the kids feel comfortable, always smiling and joking around with them. He made every appointment seem fun with his jovial personality and fun-loving spirit. At a recent appointment, he was heard reassuring one of his teenage patients that she could still come back after she went off to college. I thought it was so sweet of him to let her know she didn't need to graduate from his care. Thank you for everything, Dr. John. You certainly made it lasting impression in everyone's hearts. You will be missed.

My sincere condolences to the Viveiros family. I am in absolute disbelief as I had not seen or spoken to John (Johnny) in 30+ years despite probably being less than 1/2 mile away from each other at times at Big Sandy. I always hoped (and knew) he would excel despite the years of disconnect and he did. To read his professional accomplishments and knowing he raised a wonderful family made me appreciate how lucky we all are to have known an outstanding father, son, brother and friend. I always hoped a boat would pull up on our beach or a car would pull in our driveway with that familiar face but it just wasn't meant to be. Life just works that way, sadly. We'll meet again. Rest easy my friend.
