Obituary for Lorraine (Foley) Kickham

Lorraine (Foley) Kickham, long time resident of Brookline, currently of Marina Bay, passed away at her home on March 28th, just days after her 89th birthday.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Robert Engel (MaryEllen DeRoche), Lawrence Foley (Kimberly), Joanne Luca (Chris), Sean Foley (Melissa) and Shelagh O’Brien (Chris) and many grand nieces and nephews.

Lorraine was the wife of the late William “Swifty” Kickham, the daughter of Sarah (Langdon) and Lawrence Foley of Brookline, the sister of the late Elaine Engel, Lawrence Foley and Sally Foley. She was the sister-in-law of the late Frank Engel and Sheila Foley.

Lorraine was born, raised, and lived, nearly her entire life, in Brookline, a place she held dear to her heart. She attended St. Mary’s High School, Suffolk University and Suffolk Law School. Lorraine was a beloved, and often tough, Boston school teacher, sharing her love of Shakespeare, poetry and the English language with decades of high school students.

There were few things in life that Lorraine relished more than traveling with her sister Sally, hosting dinner parties for family and friends, reciting poetry – Yeats, Shakespeare or her own, being beautifully dressed and delivering a well-timed, witty comment.

Lorraine’s family would like to thank her caretakers, who became friends: Sheila Horrocks, Christina Coen, Debra Hayes, Christine Neelon, Patricia Stewart and Linda Sweeney.

My name is Mary Kickham Carney; Lorraine's late husband, Bill, was my John Kickham's, my father, first cousin. Lorraine was such a delightful person and so kind to me and my children. My oldest daughter, Andrea, was a student at Boston Latin School during the years that we had many opportunities to spend time with Lorraine. Lorraine's history with the Boston Public Schools and her skills as an educator enabled her to bond immediately with Andrea and empathize with the trials and tribulations of being a BLS student. She validated all of Andrea's concerns and shared the sage advice that only she would have. When my brother, Bob, was ordained in May of 1997, one of the several wonderful celebrations of that event was a lunch, after the ordination, at BC High where he is an alum. Andrea was present for both events and the 3 younger, children, John, Grace, and Robert joined us after lunch. I'll never forget Lorraine's exclamation, 'those adorable children', as they arrived; she made it a special and memorable moment that I still treasure. I think she must have done the same for many people throughout her life. I am so sorry that today's weather prevented me from attending Lorraine's wake. I would have loved to meet her family and tell these stories in person. My condolences to you all, Mary K. Carney
