Obituary for Lucia Tafur de Arciniegas

Lucia Tafur de Arciniegas, age 90, of 1372 Brush Hill Road, Milton, left this world at 4:55 a.m. on February 28, 2023. Mother to Matilde Arciniegas, of Takoma Park, MD, and Diego Arciniegas Tafur, of Boston and Provincetown, MA, Grandmother to Cristina Maria Moreno Arciniegas of Silver Spring, MD, and Rafael Arturo Moreno Arciniegas of Baltimore, MD. In the company of her late husband, Arturo Arciniegas Bonilla, and her two children, she immigrated to the United States in May of 1961. Born in Bogotá, Colombia and orphaned at an early age, Lucia attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Menlo Park, CA as a boarding student at the age of 12, while her brothers the late Dr. Alberto Tafur Villalobos, lately of Milton, MA and Carlos Tafur Villalobos, lately of Bogotá, Colombia, attended the University of California, Berkeley. According to her, she arrived speaking no English and - when one of her brothers graduated - returned to Colombia speaking no Spanish. She frequently offered this as an explanation, when asked, why she spoke English without an accent.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Lucia. My memories of Boston are forever colored by dinners, breakfasts, lunches, and other feasts on Quissett Brook Drive with her and Arturo. We used to commiserate about working for the City of Boston over her incredibly yummy 'popovers'. I have so many fond remembrances of that time. Please accept my condolences.
