Obituary for Marek Eugeniusz Konka
Marek Eugeniusz Konka, 80, of Dorchester, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Warsaw, Poland, Marek was the beloved son of the late Eugeniusz and Wanda (Parada) Konka, devoted husband of Halina (Swiatlowska) Konka, loving father of Kasia Savill and her husband Robert of Stoughton, Pete Konka of Dorchester, cherished grandfather of Robert III and Julianna Savill.
In 1980, Marek became actively involved in the Polish Solidarity movement, standing alongside those who fought for freedom, workers’ rights, and democracy during communist rule in Poland.
As a result of his opposition activities, Marek was imprisoned by the communist government. Following his imprisonment, he was given a choice: leave Poland or remain under continued oppression. Choosing freedom and a better future for his family, Marek emigrated to the United States with his wife, Halina, who was pregnant with their first child. With only two suitcases, ten dollars, and their beloved dog, they began a new life in the United States.
In recognition of his dedication to freedom and his opposition to the communist regime, Marek was awarded the Cross of Freedom and Solidarity by the President of Poland in 2012, as well as the honorary distinction “For Services to Independence” by the Office for Veterans and Victims of Oppression.
After arriving in the United States, Marek built a life through hard work, determination, and perseverance. He worked as a machinist for most of his career and took great pride in providing for his family.
Music was one of Marek’s greatest passions. As a young man in Poland, he graduated from a prestigious music school. A gifted and versatile musician, he played a variety of instruments, including keyboard, guitar, drums, saxophone, violin, and accordion. After immigrating to the United States, he shared his love of music by performing weekend brunches at the Swiss House at Boston Bowl. He also brought joy to countless family gatherings and holidays, often sitting at the keyboard and filling the room with music that became part of cherished family memories.
Marek’s life was defined by courage, resilience, sacrifice, and love. His journey from Warsaw to the United States, his commitment to freedom, and his devotion to family leave a legacy that will endure for generations.
