Obituary for Martha Jane McMahon

Martha McMahon, 73, a long-time resident of Milton, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 22, 2026.

An accomplished attorney, Martha graduated from Columbia Law School in 1978. Before entering public service, Martha was a partner at the law firm McCormack & Putziger where she worked on innovative real estate projects, such as the development of Rowes Wharf, the addition of office and retail space to the Government Center Garage, 101 Arch Street, 99 Summer Street, 125 Summer Street, and the Massachusetts General Hospital facility at the Charlestown Navy Yard.

In 2025, Martha retired from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance after 26 years of service. From complex land acquisitions and property transfers to lease negotiations and infrastructure development, she brought unmatched legal expertise, strategic thinking, and a deep commitment to public service. She played a key role in the sale of land to The Greater Boston Food Bank, sold land for housing on underutilized state land, and drafted many pieces of legislation.

Colleagues and partners alike valued her sound counsel, steady leadership, and collaborative spirit. Martha was a mentor and resource to countless attorneys and staff, generously sharing insights and setting a high standard of professionalism.

In addition to her career as an attorney, Martha also served as an adjunct faculty member at Babson College and Suffolk University. She taught courses ranging from Oral Communication to Legal Communication. She loved working with the students and brought a wealth of real-world experience to the classroom.

In her personal life, Martha loved to travel and for many years did walking tours of Europe. In her later years, she went on an African safari and a tour of China. In 1981, Martha was one of the founding members of the Quincy Choral Society. During her 45 years with the chorus, she often performed as a featured soloist and served as their president for almost 2 decades. She toured with the chorus to England, France, Russia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, Switzerland, and Wales. She also enjoyed performing with the Company Theatre where she delighted audiences as the Mother Superior in The Sound of Music and, in her own words, any “comedic old lady character who had to sing,”

Martha was a member of First Presbyterian Church for over 30 years where she was a member of the choir and a featured soloist. She was an Ordained Elder and served as Clerk of Session for almost two decades. She also went on several mission trips to Bangladesh and Malawi.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Geraldine McMahon. A lifelong lover of “furry, family members,” she is survived by her beloved dog Ben.

Visitation Friday, June 12, from 4:00-7:00 pm at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE. The funeral service will be Saturday, June 13 at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church, 270 Franklin St, Quincy, MA 02169.

Donations can be made in her memory to the Allen Thomas Music Memorial Fund at First Presbyterian Church or to the Quincy Choral Society.
