Obituary for Michael Timothy Stenson

Mike Stenson, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, and a greatly respected motion picture executive who developed and produced some of the most successful films of all time during his tenure as president of Jerry Bruckheimer Films, passed away on April 26, 2026. The son of Tom and Mary “Molly” Stenson, originally from Ireland, Mike is survived by his brothers John and his wife, Mary, Tom and his wife, Mary, Robert and his wife, Kristin Callaghan, and nieces and nephews Kaitlin, Christopher, Elizabeth, Jack, Grace, Aidan, and Keira.

As early as high school, Mike loved movies and knew he wanted to make them. While he achieved great personal success, he always shunned the spotlight preferring to highlight the contributions of others. Despite his success, he remained down-to-earth with an intellect matched only by his generosity, kindness and wit.

“Mike was one of the most brilliant individuals I’ve ever known or worked with,” said Jerry Bruckheimer. “His sense of story and complete knowledge of film production from development through filming and beyond was just amazing. Mike’s relationships with talent on both sides of the camera was legendary. I can’t express enough how much I will miss him, and what a huge loss this is to me, everyone who worked with Mike through the years, and of course, his family.”

Mike was born April 29, 1960, in Boston and was a graduate of Boston College High School (1978), Harvard University (1982), and Harvard Business School (1986). After completing his undergraduate degree, he worked in independent film as a production assistant in Cambridge and New York for two years before returning to Harvard to complete his graduate education.

After completing business school, Mike began his tenure at Disney in Special Projects before moving into the production department at Hollywood Pictures as a creative executive. He was subsequently promoted to Executive Vice President, overseeing development and production for Hollywood Pictures as well as Touchstone Pictures.

In 1998, Mike left to become President of Jerry Bruckheimer Films, where he remained until retiring in 2014. There, he significantly expanded their slate of films and oversaw every aspect of major productions such as “Black Hawk Down,” the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, both “National Treasure” films, and “Remember the Titans.”

Mike prioritized family and especially enjoyed seeing his nieces and nephews grow and mature. He loved joking with them, hearing their perspectives on life, and inviting family members to his movie premieres. Mike also had great love and respect for those who served in the military and generously supported various veterans’ organizations, especially those supporting the wounded and their families.

Most importantly, he was a person of high moral character and conscience. He had a strong sense of justice and fairness, as well as compassion for the injured and suffering of this world. He was truly a good man who will be greatly missed by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
