Obituary for Stephen James Zammit

Stephen James Zammit, Sr., of Milton, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026 after a brave battle with interstitial lung disease.

Steve was the son of the late Philip and Beulah (Schexnayder) Zammit of West Palm Beach, Florida.

Steve earned his undergraduate degree and PhD at Florida State University. It was there that he met the love of his life, Vitoria Nascimento of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Steve and Vitoria shared 48 beautiful years of marriage and had one son, Stephen Zammit, Jr. of Wellesley, Massachusetts.

Steve’s intellectual curiosity led him to several fulfilling careers. He began as a math teacher in Florida before moving to Massachusetts where he worked in corporate training at Digital Equipment Corporation for eighteen years. He later transitioned into management consulting before finding a passion for real estate sales in Greenwich, CT.

While Steve found professional success across diverse fields, his greatest joy came from being a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He treasured his four grandchildren and delighted in sharing his love of learning and play with them. He spent many hours teaching them chess, hearts and Monopoly. He loved attending Catherine’s theater performances, listening to Sean play guitar, and watching Luke and Finn build their latest Lego creations.

Beyond his devotion to family, Steve nurtured a lifelong love for cooking, gardening and reading. His Thanksgiving dinners were legendary. Christmas was his favorite season, and he was blessed to spend one final cherished holiday with his brother, Phil, niece, Lynn, and the rest of his family.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Vitoria; his loving son, Stephen, and daughter-in-law, Jennifer; beloved grandchildren, Sean, Catherine, Luke and Finn; loving brother, Philip (Judith) Zammit; sisters-in-law, Cirlene Resende and Irlene Nascimento; and extended family whom he adored.

A private service will be held for the family.

In lieu of flowers, the Zammit family kindly requests that memorial gifts be made in Steve's name to the “ILD Clinical and Translational Research Fund 227400” at Massachusetts General Hospital to support its ongoing work in interstitial lung disease. Gifts may be made online at giving.massgeneral.org or by checks made payable to “Mass General Hospital” that can be mailed to: Massachusetts General Hospital Development Office, Attention: Connor Burns/Steve Zammit Family, 125 Nashua Street, Suite 540, Boston, MA 02114, Office 857.260.4873.
